Sunday, December 4, 2011, marked the 40th anniversary of the Hartford Chorale, the primary symphonic chorus for the greater Hartford community. The Chorale spent the day doing what it loves best, singing! -- this time with the Hartford Symphony, performing Vaughn Williams's Christmas cantata, Hodie at the Belding Theater.

The post-performance reception was attended by current and former members of the Chorale, as well as Governor Dannel Malloy and his wife, Cathy Malloy, the new chief executive officer of the Greater Hartford Arts Council. Founding Music Director Henley Denmead and current Music Director Richard Coffey spoke, and Chorale Board President Michael Dunne read a proclamation from Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra declaring December 4, 2011 Hartford Chorale 40th Anniversary Day in the City of Hartford.
Not even a fire alarm could dampen the spirits of the event. Evacuated to the street next to the Belding Theater, the members of the Chorale and their guests entertained passers-by and first responders with Christmas carols until they were allowed to return to the reception.
The Hartford Chorale, founded in 1972, is a chorus of more than
150 men and women who are selected annually through competitive
auditions. Singers come from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York
and Rhode Island, and represent diverse occupations in business
and the professions. Richard Coffey is
the Music Director. He served as Interim Music Director for one
year following the resignation of Frank
Nemhauser in May of 2005. The announcement of his appointment in
June 2006 as the permanent director was greeted with great enthusiasm
by the Chorale membership. Coffey is also the Music Director of
CONCORA with whom the Chorale collaborates on a regular basis.
The Hartford Chorale, a volunteer-based, not-for-profit organization, serves as the primary
symphonic chorus for the greater Hartford community. The Chorale provides experienced, talented
singers with the opportunity to study and perform at an exceptional level of musicianship.
Through its concerts and collaborations with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and other organizations,
the Chorale seeks to reach and inspire the widest possible audiences with exceptional performances
of a broad range of choral literature, including renowned choral masterpieces.
